ConCalls: Prime Minister’s Guilty Mind

The Prime Minister is acting like someone with a guilty mind. It’s been hard on all Conservatives I’ve spoken with to admit this is the case. Consider you’re a Conservative (if you aren’t), and imagine the possibility that the Prime Minister is implicated in a conspiracy to commit elections fraud. If you’re not willing to overlook that level of corruption for the good of your party, what party/candidates could you possibly support in the next election? The Progressive Conservatives are gone, and Liberals are “Lieberals“. This is a disaster unfolding for Conservative voters.

If Harper had any reason to genuinely believe that the Liberals were behind the calls, as he has trotted out Dean Del Mastro to allege over the past week, he would have called an inquiry weeks ago, correctly sensing an opportunity to finish off his old nemesis.

Okay, let’s hear the theories for why the Prime Minister, hungry for an Adscam inquiry, is not hungry for one now. Why not finish off the Liberals who are supposedly suspects in the illegal robocalls, at least according to Del Mastro?

Mr. Nanos said Mr. Harper’s early jump into the fray last week is a signal the Prime Minister is aiming his defence at the Conservative Party’s core base of supporters, as opposed to voters from the 64 per cent of the electorate that did not want Mr. Harper re-elected. “The Conservative Party can say absolutely, definitively, that it has no role in any of this,” Mr. Harper told the Commons last Wednesday.

“The reason they have been effective is because their strategy has been to effectively nurture the core, they’re not out to win a majority of popular support, they’re out to win a majority of seats using their core,” Mr. Nanos said.

“That’s why the Prime Minister is engaged on this, and very direct. I think it’s a big risk. I think it’s unusual for a Prime Minister to engage so fast, so definitively on the issue, because it doesn’t leave a lot of room for manoeuverbility if this does go sideways,” Mr. Nanos said.

(emphasis added)

Has it gone sideways already, and is it about to spin out of control?
I’ll let Jim Harris’s point answer that:

In the 2006 election, campaigning on accountability and transparency in government, Harper said: “There’s going to be a new code on Parliament Hill. Bend the rules, you will be punished; break the law, you will be charged; abuse the public trust, you will go to prison.”

The failure of the Conservatives to now make unequivocal statements like this, and to ensure that there is a full, transparent investigation to uncover the source of the electoral fraud in the 2011 election will ultimately prove corrosive to Conservatives — just as Watergate proved corrosive to Republicans and Adscam fatal to the Liberals.

  1. The reason he isn’t going to start a public inquiry is clear as day.

People only read the headlines and so far the headlines have all focused on alleged Conservative malfeasance. It wouldn’t matter what the conclusions were so much as the bad optics of a government trying to figure out what bad things they did. They’d get tarred even if the outcome was mostly benign.

Oh, and the other reason is historical. The Adscam inquiry didn’t do the Liberals any favours. Pundits and opinion writers keep claiming that “coming clean” is the safest policy and that “it’s the coverup not the crime” that sickens voters.

Nonsense. Keeping the waters muddy and refusing the almost daily demands of minister resignations emphasize the public’s belief that it’s mostly partisan gamesmanship and tomfoolery.

The Conservatives are playing this game in a risky way but it’s been working for 5 years. Why would they stop now? The opposition has done itself no favours by flushing their cheeks with anger of the stupidest things during that same 5 years. We’ve alrgely tuned them out.

  2. “…what party/candidates could you possibly support in the next election? The Progressive Conservatives are gone, and Liberals are “Lieberals“.

Don’t forget to lump the NDP with this group! Scarborough Rouge River has been a hotbed of NDP voter fraud for years! “Marlene Gallyot, a federal Conservative candidate who lost to the NDP’s Rathika Sitsabaiesan, has complained to Elections Canada, alleging ineligible voters “by the dozens” turned up on voting day and filed ballots illegally. “They came with a Future Shop bill,” she told CBC News. “They came in with a Canadian Tire bill. They were coming in without proper identification.”

“Gallyot was born in India but speaks Tamil as a second language. She told CBC she tried to put a stop to the alleged vote-coaching when she saw… “When they got to know that I could speak and understand Tamil, they were shocked, at least to some degree I was able to control it but there were too many polling stations.” http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2012/03/13/voting-scarborough.html

It isn’t just Conservatives who have complained and asked for an investigation, “Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon captured Scarborough-Rouge River in the October provincial election but has also raised questions surrounding election-day additions to the voters list. The problems he points to are almost identical to those outlined in Gallyot’s complaint to Elections Canada…

Even municipal (non party elections) are being defrauded “Namu Ponnambalam ran as a candidate in a 2010 municipal election in Scarborough. He showed CBC News a suitcase of documents outlining 1,400 of the 3,500 names added to the municipal voters list on voting day. Many of the names listed are Tamil. CBC confirmed that many of the addresses used on the voting forms do not exist.”

    CBC confirmed.

    • (From above link) “One man who worked as a deputy returning officer for Elections Ontario in October’s election told CBC News that poll workers were encouraged to allow people to vote, even if they lacked the required ID… “They would have a driver’s licence to show that they live in Scarborough but [the address] wasn’t for that particular riding,” he said. “When we asked for a bill or a letter that shows they live in the building, they would say they moved in last Friday, for instance, and they don’t have any paperwork to show, but that they would like to vote.

“After a while you see 10 or 12 you start to wonder, ‘Is this a trend or what?’ We found it strange that they come to the building they don’t have anything to show you that they live there.”

“Even if they didn’t have ID, our instructions were to register them. Our job was not to turn anyone away. So we’d register them and get them to vouch that they are who they say they are. They have to take an oath to say that.”

      Real fraud… not media manufactured.

*****Note***** once you are on the municipal voting list you are “over time, rolled into the official voters list in both federal and provincial elections.”

      Fraud, fraud, fraud.

  4. Governments, it doesn’t matter which one, are nothing but frauds these days especially. People who run in politics are just arrogant enough to want their name in history books…they don’t care how it gets there just that it does. Talk about making a person vomit.
