Don’t Toews Me Bro! – Harper’s NCC Letter

Read the First Part, if you want.

This following letter may be the most hilarious thing the Vic Toews Internet Spying Bill scandal has produced. Stephen Harper, the 2001 President of the NCC, wrote supporters the following:

“The jackasses at Elections Canada are out of control.”
Please excuse my language, but when I learned Elections Canada’s bureaucrats have pressed charges against a Canadian citizen, I just blew my cool. That is the exact language I used.

Was he mad at Election’s Canada for charging Conservatives (who later pleaded guilty for a reduced penalty) with the In-Out scandal? Nope, the Conservative Party and their electoral fraud scheme hadn’t been invented yet. He was mad for a legitimate reason: Early publication of election results to elsewhere in Canada – a practice common thanks to social media.

What’s strikingly funny (also), is this:

What was Paul’s crime?
He simply posted news on his personal website. And no, it wasn’t part of a criminal conspiracy, or luring children toward violent pornography. It was actually something government officials seem to believe is a lot more dangerous – information.

In fact, this is the first attempt by our government to control the Internet and press charges – just for the sake of controlling information. The implications are very ominous, very scary.

More gold is contained in the NCC Harper letter. He basically makes the case for WikiLeaks, years before that website was founded (and its primary creator’s {Assange} life threatened by Harper’s former primary adviser {Flanagan}).

Paul saw Section 329 as nothing more than a gag law and an archaic gag law at that. As he put it,“People can beam around information worldwide in micro-seconds, and government wants to ban our use of it when it becomes inconvenient. It’s time for the Canadian government to join the rest of us in the 21st century.” So he purposely defied the law on the principle that the government has no business controlling the free flow of public information on the Internet. He believes, as do I, that all Canadians should have the right to disseminate public information. It’s called free speech.

I believe the Jean-Pierre Kingsleys of the world fear Paul Bryan. Or more to the point, they fear what Paul represents – a free, independent-minded citizen using technology to give power back to individuals. After all, information is power. The less control the government has over the flow of information, the less control it can exert over its citizens.

So Elections Canada has charged him with breaking a law that’s as dangerous as it is ludicrous.

There was no “electoral fraud” involved, sorry.

There was a difference of opinion, and a legitimate one, given the fact that the Conservatives won their first appeal on this (proving that it was at least arguable under law). They also weren’t the first party to do this (your own party has been guilty of doing this as well, remember?), just the first to organize it.

    “Fraud” it was not.

    • Fred they admitted to the crime to get a lesser penalty. Saying it was a difference of opinion is like saying a murderer had a violent disagreement with their victim.

      • They still won that first appeal, which makes referring to this as a ‘crime’ pretty silly (and comparing it to murder, even more so). It was an infraction based on a difference of legal opinion, nothing more. I suppose you think of the entire Conservative party as convicted criminals now?

    • Your claim that the Green party has been responsible for the same thing is total nonsense.

The Cons should have had their 2006 result invalidated for exceeding campagin spending limits.

      • I’m sorry…you *are* on Liblogs, right? I just automatically assumed you were a Liberal (why would members of a fringe party post there?)…

      • I’m sorry… you *are* commenting on my blog, so I just automatically assumed you knew I haven’t supported the Liberals in close to a decade. I was more recently a member of the SK Liberals, so I was grandfathered in on Liblogs, so to speak.

And calling the Greens a fringe party is rich. How many other Canadian parties are in governments around the world?

  3. This government is hell bent on manipulation everything to remain in power…methinks we need a coalition next time…bring them down and switch to a PR electoral system….so that the conservatives never again gain a majority of seats with a minority of votes….

    • The hopes for a coalition after election is slim, either the parties who aren’t Conservative get together beforehand and work out non-compete strategies that work in winnable ridings, or it’s up to (Progressive) Conservative party members to break up their unholy alliance with the neo-cons. If 20 Conservative MPs grew spines and voted freely (being kicked out of the Conservatives) as a result, Harper’s government would become moderately tolerable to ~40% of Canadians again.

Since it’s not on your home page, how would I know that? You are on LIBlogs, not PROGblogs (where I would at least think to look for Green Party members).

In *this* country, they’re a fringe party. Only in countries with the frightening ‘proportional representation’ system are they considered a real political party (and you can see what kind of damage the fringe parties have done to some of the European countries now teetering on the verge of bankruptcy)…

    • Yes, I’m suuure it’s the Green’s fault since they’ve constructed the economic system that’s failing. Get a clue!

I’m also on Progblogs, and how am I to know where you’re reading from? Maybe you shouldn’t just a blog (or blogger) by its (his) aggregators?

I didn’t say that. I said it was PR’s fault (for giving the fringe parties the power to extort concessions from government in order to get anything but the most innocuous legislation passed). Giving tree huggers, porn stars, yogic flyers, animal rights activists, etc the power to influence government spending is scary, and leads to exactly what those European nations are experiencing now.

I’m also on Progblogs, and how am I to know where you’re reading from? Maybe you shouldn’t just a blog (or blogger) by its (his) aggregators?

        Fair enough.
