Angus Green

Angus Reid called this evening for a survey about Saskatchewan politics. They neglected to mention Larissa Shasko, leader of the Green Party of Saskatchewan at any point, even though they were asking about Ryan Bater, Dwain Lingenfelter, and Brad Wall and the public’s feeling of government direction. I objected to their uneven polling. So long as pollsters do junk like this, it’s no better than push polling. And I moderately agree with that statement, while I strongly disapprove of their technique.

I listed these as the top three issues off the top of my head: Environment, healthcare, and debt.

  1. The Green Party of Saskatchewan ran a much stronger campaign during the 2007 provincial election running a virtual full slate with 48 out of 58 ridings with Green candidates. The GPS were able to capture 2.0% of the vote with candidates receiving anywhere between 1.23% to 6.24% or the vote. The highest was in the riding of Cumberland where the Green candidate placed ahead of the Liberal candidate. During the campaign, the GPS was led by Sandra Finley who ran in the riding of Saskatoon Nutana capturing 4.1% of the vote. Only three candidates were able to achieve a higher result.

A provincial party that cannot field a full slate and gets 2% of the vote and you complain that they are specifically mentioned in polling? Isn’t that what “other” is for?

    • You mean “are not”?
Yes, but no “other” was offered either. Your solution doesn’t eliminate the problem that answers are suggested for some parties, and not others, leading to skewed results, and skewed perceptions. The Orange Crush highlighted this problem with polling in Canada.
