Don’t Make It Sound Like There’s More Than One Thing

“recognize its own climate change efforts, such as carbon capture and storage. ”
Effort, not “efforts”. There’s only been one effort made, and arguably the CCS project increases emissions since it’s an Enhanced Oil Recovery project that enables Cenovus to extract more oil which will be burned. Whether the net CO2 from CCS is a reduction or an increase has not been officially confirmed, probably because it is an increase in pollution overall.

The federal Ministry of the Environment sent Manitoba a letter in December giving it until the end of February to sign on, or else lose its share of a $1.4-billion clean energy fund.

The fund is only available to provinces that ratified the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, which Manitoba and Saskatchewan refused to sign in December 2016.

The Premier and Environment Ministers are arrogant, stubborn, anti-science mutton heads. How else can anyone sum it up better than that?

EV Charging in Regina

This blog post is a 7 month update to my earlier summary of the status of EV charging in Regina.

Most EV owners charge at home, where they park for the night.

Better EV drivers charge where their shared car is parked, at a car sharing parking spot. None exist yet in Saskatchewan, but Saskatoon Car Share Co-op is actively working on providing that.

Ottawa has been talking about improving EV infrastructure for Canadians, but so far Saskatchewan isn’t part of that conversation with the feds. While private businesses have done a great deal with help from Sun Country Highways to build up Level 2 charging in many Canadian communities, the more rapid Level 3 chargers are out of reach for the average Canadian outside of BC, Quebec, or southern Ontario. The City of Regina has been unhelpful also, and the Province of Saskatchewan directed SGI to end a low-emissions vehicle rebate years ago. Former Minister McMillian now is the President of the Canadian Ass. of Petrol’ Producers. No conflict there, eh?

That’s right, Shell is beating the Canadian government on installing Level 3 chargers, albeit in the UK. Will Shell in Canada beat the EV-lovin’ Environment and Climate Change Minister on the mission to electrify Canada’s highway network?

P.S. Our Leaf cannot make use of Level 3 charging; we got it without one installed. Why bother, when there are 0 available in Saskatchewan? It charges on Level 1 at the house, or Level 2 at Peavey Mart or Winmar if going out of town. Thanks Sun Country Highway!

Twitter Suspended Victim

Some days (most days) Twitter really sucks at limiting abuse, and supporting victims of the same.

And closer to home, a long time blogging and Twitter friend has been in the news, but I missed it. She was sexually assaulted by another well known figure in the Saskatchewan Twitter & political sphere. She was then questioned inappropriately by Saskatoon Police about the assault.

#CrudePower The Price of Oil tonight at #UofR

Yet then-economy minister Bill Boyd’s ministry made no mention of Bunz’s death, and documents obtained by journalists through freedom of information requests and other sources show repeated “failures in performance by oil and gas companies, including serious infractions, failed safety audits, daily H2S readings beyond provincial air quality standards.”

This, from a government highlighting all OH&S violations weekly? This, from a government from which the lone and most important news release Tuesday was about a Saskatoon moose-poaching case?

After the Toronto Star-led investigation Monday, there was no public news release or ministerial press conference.

What A Week

A week ago my Dad passed away from complications due to his cancer treatments. I last saw him in person 3 weeks ago on Labour Day Sunday, and he seemed to be doing about as well as anyone who has been through months of chemotherapy. Earlier in the week my Godmother, Betty Klein, also passed away from cancer. Prior to that, my friend Dawn lost her husband to cancer too.

Then I had to move some furniture around in my condo. All this after a thousand kilometers of driving in the past few days. A couple muted birthday celebrations in the middle of that too. I did enjoy seeing my extended family, although many noted we all wished it was under happier circumstances. We’re getting to the older side of life where more often we all meet during a funeral than a wedding or holiday.

Solar Eclipse from Regina, SK

The eclipse today was visible from Regina, but not the totality available to Americans in many states.

Solar Eclipse August 21, 2017
My new Canon SX540 HS did a good job with a pair of solar eclipse filter glasses taped over the lens. The sunspot chain was very sharp and visible at 200X digital zoom, 80ISO.

I made a projector that worked well:
