The ongoing legal wrangling surrounding the fate of Alex Hundert might seem to some an irrelevant, isolated series of events. It is, in fact, a case which goes to the very heart, the very soul of what it means to be a free, democratic citizen. Alex’s fate is irreducibly intertwined with the fate of all Canadians and, critically, the fate of the bruised and battered Canadian democracy as a whole.
Let us understand each other: what is currently happening to Alex Hundert is, to paraphrase his attorney, an astonishing breach of his human and civil rights.
