Studying Cartoon #HarperHistory

There are many examples on Twitter of people mocking Stephen Harper’s bizarre claim today that the NDP didn’t support fighting Hitler. “How could they?” sane and educated people would ask incredulously, since the NDP did not exist in its present form until the 1960s (nearly 30 years after the start of WWII, and many years after the death of Hitler).

BC Blue Con blogger Dean was using the hashtag #HarperHistory to criticize the NDP further, demonstrating his severe lack of humour and ability to mock Harper for an outrageous(ly funny) comment. “When the NDP faithful condemn Tommy Douglas for his vile views instead of worshipping at his feet, I’ll join in the mockery” ~Dean S. Apparently it’s more important to notify people that the NDP have actually wanted to give refuge to people escaping from fighting wars, than it is to make light of a bonehead comment from the Prime Minister who seeks to rewrite history.

Maybe he’s more like Wile-E-Coyote than the Road Runner? Never catches up, but essential to the joke. The Harper Conservatives are all Looney Tunes, that’s for sure.

Number 2, as of posting.

Here’s part of the reason why:

  1. Sigh… I guess you also didn’t support fighting Hitler, and neither did I despite Hitler putting my grandparents through an unimaginable hell.

At some point we are going to have to demand more from our politicians

    • By Harper’s same twisted standard, the CPC also didn’t oppose Hitler (since it didn’t exist), and if they’re taking credit for Progressive Conservative party policies from 60 years ago, they were responsible for the cancellation of the Avro Arrow (Galloping Beaver pointed this out). The Conservatives have been plotting for more than 50 years to buy the F-35 at a wasteful price tag.

  2. Thinking about this more, it wouldn’t even make sense if the NDP was around back then to oppose fighting Hitler. A political party changes over time. The Liberals today are not the same thing as the Liberals of the 40′s. That goes double for the Conservatives.

Also to this blog, since previous comments (just a couple of days ago) that compared Harper to both Hitler and Stalin and called him a fascist are clearly supported by Saskboy himself.

As to the Prime Minister’s remark, has everyone forgotten that the NDP at the time was known as the CCF, who *did* oppose fighting Hitler? They merely changed their name and added a bunch of Unionists to their ranks, watered down their ‘manifesto’ into a ‘declaration’ (or something like that) and carried on as usual. Same members, same goals…same party.

      • My reply, or lack thereof to any comment that is not my own does not imply endorsement of the ideas in that comment. To suggest otherwise is simply something Hitler would have done 8-P

      • Except for the fact that the CCF did support the war. so other than the fact you are completely and utterly wrong, you are right.

But for most of the CCF leadership, those fine words didn’t last a day past the beginning of a real war. In September 1939, the CCF national council voted 13-9 to support the government’s declaration of war. In the House of Commons, only one CCF M.P., party leader J.S. Woodsworth, spoke and voted against the war.

This was a major betrayal of CCF principles, and it’s very likely that a majority of the CCF’s membership would have opposed the war if they had been given a say.

    Whatever you say….

It doesn’t imply it…it outright confirms it. It’s your blog, and you are ethically (and *legally*, let’s not forget…should you be considering posting more libelous statements of your own..;) responsible for everything here.
