Don’t Care

This photo is really clever, and the poster is great! If only there was a way to make people care about politics, that didn’t involve messy things like mayhem and destruction. I guess we’re probably doomed to democratic death by apathy, things are just too good for too many for democracy to matter to them.

  1. Well, I think I disagree that it is the apathy that is going to do away with democracy. Rather that it is hyper-partisanship that is doing us in.

For example, it seems that not outrageous action by the current PM can ever even be criticized by the party rank and file. This “My Country Right or Wrong” attitude is very much reflected in the polls I think. The prorogation has shifted just a small portion of the PC base and look at how the polls have shifted.

What I am saying is that those conservatives, just like those liberals who called for the sponsorship scandal investigation, who know their own party and not only the opposition can make mistakes are keeping democracy working somewhat. But when you have a cult of personality or a “We have to hold on to power no matter what” kind of attitude like we have today, democracy breaks down.

Remember that if the apathetic get it in them to vote, they will only vote for themselves and whomever promises them the most “tax-cut” or whatever. I’m not sure I particularly want to encourage them to vote. There reasons for being apathetic might be justified!

  2. The most apathetic are so far out of touch with reality, that they are indeed dangerous if they vote, as you say. The next person to inspire the apathetic better be benevolent, or we’ll certainly end up with a scarier time than the 1930s were for many in the world.
