Phone to go to 50 cents

May 1, 2007

I was in the US a few years ago and found that all of the payphones were asking 50 cents (USD!) to make a local phone call. What a rip off I thought, since it’s just 25 cents in Canada. Well, that’s about to change because the CRTC was keeping the rate at the reasonable quarter dollar. Now the blood thirsty phone companies will be asking double the rate.

I say we let them start charging 50 cents, as soon as they make their machines capable of accepting the 50 cent coins. That’ll kill two birds with one stone. Either they’ll not make the switch, or we’ll finally convince the Mint to start circulating the handy 50 cent coins, and possibly discontinue a now worthless coin like the nickel.

I was about to add the above blog entry to my main blog site, but the Dreamhost server stopped responding just a minute after the hotel Internet went up after it was down for hours. Perfectly bad timing I think.
